The Lab's Digital Currency InitiativeI closed the curtain on a 23-year journalism career, something that I could not have done if I hadn’t felt very excited about the opportunities ahead.The blockchain technology behind bitcoin and other digital currencies has enormous potential to disrupt the global financial system, in particular to forge financial inclusion and give people power over their assets and identity that until now has, for too many, been lacking.We are at a moment, I believe, like that of the dawn of the Internet.We're only scratching the surface on how this technology could change the structure of our financial and economic institutions.In this context, I help the Media Lab's new Digital Currency Initiative to incubate blockchain-related projects that are uniquely seen to have a social impact, with a particular focus on the developing world.I see my role continuing as a communicator and an explainer, helping to boost awareness generally about the potential ingrained in this technology.
Getting people's heads around this stuff is still a challenge and I enjoy taking it up on behalf of MIT, just as I saw education around bitcoin as a key part of my job at WSJ.I also advise senior managers and executives from organizations of varying size on the broad implications, challenges and opportunities posed by the many applications of blockchain technology, the distributed ledger software on which bitcoin and other digital currencies are based.I draw upon the broad knowledge and contacts I developed during my period as a journalist at the world's finest financial news organization, where I covered this technology and the industry developing around it and co-authored a book on the subject.Now, my insights are also formed by employment in this field at MIT, the world's leading technology research institution.I believe blockchain technology, whether it takes the form of pure decentralized applications like bitcoin or private "permissioned" ledgers, will ultimately have a sweeping, disruptive impact on our economy.

1.7K The MIT community seems pretty confident that Bitcoin is going to be big.Just look to some of the school’s more recent initiatives for proof — like the MIT Bitcoin Club, the MIT Bitcoin Project, and the Bitcoin Expo.Last fall, researchers at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the MIT's Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems developed an algorithm to predict Bitcoin's prices, and the MIT Bookstore even started accepting Bitcoin.Joi Ito Now as Bitcoin gains traction, it seemed to make a lot of sense to launch a research effort focused solely on cryptocurrencies at the MIT Media Lab, according to Media Lab Director Joi Ito.Both faculty and students from across the Institute, as well as some Media Lab member companies, will participate in this initiative, Ito revealed Wednesday on his blog.Ito said the Media Lab has also brought on a former White House senior advisor for mobile and data innovation, Brian Forde, to spearhead the overall effort, along with MIT CSAIL professor Nickolai Zeldovich.
