Fortune 500Apple’s Week Centered on Tim Cook and QualcommTerm SheetNo, Uber’s Business Model Is Not the ProblemUber‘Nobody Cares About Uber More’: Employees Past and Present Speak Out Against Travis Kalanick’s OustingCEO DailyCEO Daily: Saturday, June 24, 2017BitcoinIf You Bought $5 of Bitcoin 7 Years Ago, You’d Be $4.4 Million RicherLucinda ShenSeven years ago, the value of a single bitcoin was worth a quarter-of-a-cent.Today, that single bitcoin is worth upwards of $2,200.Monday marked the seventh anniversary of what is said to be the first recorded instance of bitcoin used in a real world transaction.Over the course of seven years, bitcoin's value has multiplied 879,999 times over since 2010.If an investor had decided to spend five dollars back then on about 2,000 bitcoins, that stake would be worth $4.4 million today. With $1,200 spent on some 480,000 bitcoins, the investor would be worth at least $1.1 billion today. The early months of 2017 have been particularly heady days for bitcoin.

Since the beginning of the year, the value of the cryptocurrency has surged as it gains legitimacy in countries like Japan.Investors have also come to see the currency as something of a safe haven asset amid geopolitical turmoil — and there's been plenty of that in recent months, in both Europe and the United States. And that first transaction?A software programmer on "Bitcoin Talk" known as Lazlo Hanyecz offered to 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas. For a least three days, no one took bite of the offer, with Hanyecz writing: "So nobody wants to buy me pizza? Is the bitcoin amount I'm offering too low?"A user eventually paid about $25 for two pizzas. In today's bitcoins, those pizzas cost Hanyecz $22 million. This is an archived post. You won't be able to vote or comment.Today I'm a millionaire (self.Bitcoin)submitted by with today's rise in bitcoin I'm officially a millionaire.I'm gonna cash out over the next 30 days.I'll keep 50 % in bitcoin gold and silver for long-term and the remaining 50 % for a house and vanguard.

Would I be lying to them if I do that?I don't want to lie to my friends, but I don't want them to think that I'm rich. And what's more, it looks like whoever this was got very lucky, because less than 12 hours after this was posted Bitcoins started crashing hard for the next straight week:Everything about this just blew me away.I'm answering anonymously because I'm not security-savvy enough to keep myself from being a target.

warren buffett bitcoinWithin a day, the value of a bitcoin had fallen to less than 10 cents and if I'm remembering correctly, actually approached zero*.I don't know for sure.I had to stop watching the markets.I was extremely depressed.Just days before I'd been so astounded by the returns that I'd been considering liquidating other investments and shifting to bitcoin, against all instinct and logic. Now I was out a huge amount of money in exchange for worthless digital bits of information.Thankfully I make enough money that losing 13k, while very painful, did not ruin me.I spent a few weeks wallowing in my own misery.BTC prices recovered significantly but I didn't trust it anymore.I backed up my wallet and didnt think about it again except for the occasional reminder when some random brick & mortar retailer would start accepting bitcoins as payment. Then a month ago, a friend casually mentioned that he'd discovered this cool new thing called Bitcoin and was ecstatic about how much money he could make.

My heart sank and I knew I would have to talk to my friend about my experience.I was so ashamed of what I'd done but couldn't in good conscience let someone else fall into the same trap.I told him the story like I'm telling it here and he stopped me when he heard how many coins I had."Do you still have them?"They're worth about $35 a piece now."Ifound my wallet file.As of today, I have 1568 bitcoins that are apparently worth about 200 grand.I'm going to let these sit, since I'd already written the money off as lost, but I'm excited for the future.*** Meni Rosenfeld notes in the comments: "The value of a bitcoin did not fall to less than 10 cents. There was a brief period when the traded rate at Mtgox was completely misaligned with the actual value."Since I don't know enough to distinguish, I'll take his word for it.** Update 4/10: This post got a lot more attention than I was expecting. After thinking through the comments and talking with family, I decided to sell some (but not all) of my bitcoins.
